How to Find an MCS Certified Installer in the UK

Data Menu· Research team

Start with the technology you need

The first step when trying to find an MCS certified installer is to identify the technology you actually need.

MCS installer information covers multiple renewable and low-carbon technologies. A company appearing as an MCS installer does not necessarily mean it works with every technology covered by the scheme.

Relevant categories can include:

  • Solar photovoltaic systems
  • Air source heat pumps
  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Other heat pump technologies
  • Battery storage
  • Biomass
  • Solar thermal
  • Wind
  • Hydro
  • Micro combined heat and power

Starting with the technology prevents you from wasting time researching companies that may be MCS certified but are not relevant to the installation or market segment you are interested in.

For technology-specific information, see our guides to MCS solar installers and MCS heat pump installers.

For totals of MCS installer listings by technology and county, see Data Menu's technology study and geography study. These show counts only, not individual installers.

Narrow your MCS installer search by location

Once you know the technology, geography is the next useful filter.

Installer listings can include company addresses, postcodes and information about the regions in which a company operates. These fields can help narrow a broad national search to businesses relevant to a particular area.

This is especially useful because a company's registered or listed address does not always tell the whole story about the areas it serves.

If you are looking for an installer for a specific project, consider both the company's location and whether it actually serves your area.

Check the certification information

Finding a company is only part of the process. Where current MCS certification matters, the relevant certification information should also be checked.

Useful fields can include:

  • Certification number
  • Certification body
  • Relevant technology
  • Current certification status

This is also why terminology such as "MCS approved", "MCS registered" or "MCS accredited" should not replace checking the actual information associated with the installer.

We explain those terms in our guide to MCS approved, accredited, registered and certified installers.

Research the company itself

Certification tells you something important about the installer, but it is not the only information worth researching.

Once you have identified potentially relevant companies, you can investigate them further using details such as:

  • Company website
  • Telephone number
  • Email address
  • Business address
  • Postcode
  • Technologies offered
  • Regions served

A homeowner may use this information to contact a small number of installers and compare potential providers.

A business may use the same information differently, perhaps to build a supplier list, identify potential partners or research companies within a particular renewable technology.

Finding one installer vs researching the market

There are two very different reasons somebody might search for MCS installers.

Consumers and property owners generally want to find a small number of suitable companies for an installation. Their priorities may include technology, location, current certification, experience, suitability and quotations.

Businesses and researchers may instead need information about hundreds or thousands of installation companies.

Examples include:

  • Renewable energy suppliers
  • Equipment manufacturers
  • Distributors
  • Software companies
  • Market researchers
  • Consultancies
  • Business development teams

For these users, manually searching for one installer at a time is usually inefficient because the information ultimately needs to be organised into a structured list before it can be filtered or analysed.

Using structured MCS installer data

Structured installer data provides a different way to research the market.

Instead of opening individual installer profiles or company websites one at a time, businesses can work with rows and columns containing relevant company, certification, technology and geographical information.

This can make it easier to answer questions such as:

  • Which companies are associated with Solar PV?
  • Which installers work with air source heat pumps?
  • Which companies operate in a particular UK region?
  • How are listings spread across UK counties?
  • Which businesses appear across multiple renewable technologies?

Data Menu's MCS research publishes totals only, not individual installer details. It is not a replacement for checking official current certification when certification status is material to a decision.

MCS installer search checklist

A simple process can make an MCS installer search much more focused:

  1. Choose the technology you need to research.
  2. Narrow by geography using location, postcode or service region.
  3. Check certification information relevant to the technology.
  4. Research the company using its website, contact details and other available information.
  5. Verify current status where certification is important to your decision.

If your goal is simply to find one installer, this process can help you build a manageable shortlist.

If your goal is to understand the wider market, structured data can make the same filtering process practical across a much larger number of companies.

Figures are Data Menu's count of installer listings shown in the public MCS 'Find an Installer' search, grouped by county and technology, as at 15 October 2026. This is independent analysis, not official MCS statistics. Data Menu is independent of MCS and is not the official MCS directory. To find an installer or check current certification, use the MCS Find an Installer search, especially where it matters to an installation, purchasing, eligibility or compliance decision.
